    sun damage

Years of sun exposure can leave a lasting impression on your skin. From dark spots and uneven tone to fine lines and texture, the effects often build gradually over time.

  • Understanding Sun Damage

  • Sun exposure doesn't just affect the surface of your skin. UV damage reaches beneath the surface, affecting collagen, your skin barrier, pigment production, and the way skin repairs itself over time. Understanding those changes helps explain why sun damage develops, and how we can treat it more effectively.

intention

Understanding how sun damage develops allows us to take a more targeted approach. Some treatments focus on improving tone and clarity at the surface, while others support deeper repair and renewal within the skin.

  • Discrete brown spots (often called age spots or sunspots), broken capillaries and redness, leathery texture, deep wrinkles in sun-exposed areas, and loss of elasticity. Sun damage often appears decades after the exposure — the woman in her 40s often shows the damage from her 20s. The good news: most of it is treatable.

Much of it, yes. BBL (BroadBand Light) is the workhorse — it treats brown and red sun damage in three to five sessions. Lasers go deeper into texture and resurfacing. Chemical peels handle surface pigment and tone. Topical retinoids and vitamin C contribute slowly but reliably. The treatments compound — guests who do BBL plus retinoid plus daily SPF see the largest change.

BBL is BroadBand Light — a form of intense pulsed light that targets pigment and blood vessels. It treats sun damage, broken capillaries, and overall redness in one device. Most guests do a series of three to five sessions, four to six weeks apart, then annual maintenance. Downtime is minimal — usually a day of darker spots that flake off.

Mineral SPF 30 or higher, applied every morning, reapplied at midday on outdoor days. A wide-brim hat. UPF clothing for sustained sun. Sunglasses (the eye area is some of the most photoaged skin we see). Antioxidant serum in the morning multiplies SPF's effect. The work you do reversing damage erases itself without prevention.

New damage from new exposure, yes — that's why daily SPF is non-negotiable. Treated spots usually don't return if you maintain protection. Some guests have pigment that gradually creeps back with hormonal shifts or unprotected exposure. Annual maintenance treatments handle the recurrence.

Some yes, some no. Light-based treatments (BBL, IPL, some lasers) carry risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation on darker skin tones if not selected and operated carefully. Your provider will assess your Fitzpatrick skin type and may recommend gentler chemical peels, microneedling, or specific lasers tuned for darker skin. Honest assessment matters here.
