The down low on dermaplaning: smoother skin, zero downtime

There's more to dermaplaning than removing peach fuzz - though it does that too, and remarkably well. Here's what this treatment actually does, why guests keep coming back to it, and what to expect when you book one at milk + honey medSPA.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning - sometimes called a blade facial - is a non-invasive dermaplaning treatment that uses a surgical-grade scalpel to gently remove the top layer of dead skin cells and fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). The result is immediate: skin that looks smoother, feels softer, and absorbs everything you put on it more effectively.

It's one of the more approachable entry points into advanced skincare - no needles, no heat, minimal recovery.

What dermaplaning actually does for your skin

Smoother texture, right away

Unlike treatments that work gradually over weeks, dermaplaning facial treatment delivers visible improvement the same day. Removing the buildup of dull, rough dead skin cells reveals the brighter, more even surface underneath - which is part of why it's a go-to before events.

Better product absorption

With the barrier of dead skin cells and fine hair removed, your skincare products work harder. Serums, moisturizers, and SPF absorb more efficiently and penetrate more deeply. If you're already using a clinical-grade line like SkinCeuticals or Sente, dermaplaning is a meaningful upgrade to how well those products perform.

Temporary hair removal - without the myths

Dermaplaning removes vellus hair that can trap oil and contribute to clogged pores. And no - it does not cause hair to grow back thicker or darker. That's one of the most persistent myths in skincare, and it's not supported by how hair follicles actually work. The treatment doesn't disturb the follicle at all, so regrowth comes back exactly as it was before.

Safe for most skin types

Dermaplaning is suitable for most skin types, including sensitive skin. It's not recommended for active acne, open lesions, eczema, or active infections. Our medSPA providers review each guest's skin before every treatment to confirm it's the right fit.

Dermaplaning vs. shaving: what's the difference?

A common question - and a fair one. Here's how they compare:

Dermaplaning At-home shaving
Tool Surgical-grade scalpel Standard razor
Primary purpose Exfoliation + hair removal Hair removal only
Depth Removes dead skin layer + vellus hair Surface hair only
Who performs it Trained medSPA provider Self-administered
Skin benefit Improved texture, tone, absorption None beyond hair removal
Downtime None None

The short version: shaving is maintenance. Dermaplaning is a skin treatment that happens to remove hair in the process.

How to get more from your dermaplaning reservation

Pair it with another treatment

Dermaplaning works well as a standalone service, but it's particularly effective when combined with other advanced skincare treatments. Because the skin's surface is freshly cleared, treatments like chemical peels or a HydraFacial can go to work more effectively immediately after.

Extend results at home

What you do between reservations matters. After a dermaplaning treatment, keeping skin hydrated and protected makes a meaningful difference. A broad-spectrum SPF is non-negotiable - we carry options from Colorescience and SkinCeuticals that work well in a post-treatment routine. Browse our full skincare collection for home care that complements what we do in the treatment room.

What to expect at your reservation

No numbing required. No downtime after. Most guests are in and out within 30 to 60 minutes depending on whether dermaplaning is paired with another service. Mild redness immediately after is normal and typically resolves within a few hours.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and heat (saunas, hot yoga) for 24 hours after
  • Skip active exfoliants (retinol, AHAs) for 48 hours post-treatment
  • Apply SPF daily - freshly exfoliated skin is more photosensitive

Ready to see the difference?

Dermaplaning is available at our Austin spa, Houston spa, Fort Worth, and Brentwoos spa, and Culver CIty spa. Our medSPA providers will walk you through whether it's right for your skin and how it fits into a broader treatment plan.
