To help break down this technique we asked Juliana, an esthetician at Hill Country Galleria, a couple of questions. Then and Now: A brief history of contouring While many of us think that contouring is a fairly new makeup phenomenon, this technique has actually been around since Elizabethan time! During the 1920s and 30s contouring became popular for screen sirens like Greta Garbo, Mae West, and Jean Harlow, who began incorporating this technique into their film makeup. German starlet Marlene Dietrich believed that through shading and sculpting she could accentuate her face and create a more feminine appearance. In the 1990s, makeup artist Kevin Aucoin used this technique to create the chiselled looks of clients like supermodel Cindy Crawford and pop icon Janet Jackson. It wasn't until 2010 that the technique became known to the masses thanks to social media. Since then, contouring has spawned other great highlighting and shading techniques like strobing, tontouring, and henna contouring. So, what is contouring? Contouring is the using shades of light and shades of depth to your enhance and accentuate your facial features. By using lighter shades, also known as highlighting, you will be able to make areas appear larger, and by using darker shades, better known as shading, areas will appear smaller. A good contour will highlight the areas you want to accentuate, traditionally it's the bridge of your nose, under the eyes, around the eyebrows, and on your cupids bow. When contouring, there are three things you must remember; choose the correct undertones, blend sufficiently for a more professional look, and most importantly know your face shape. A contour to low or too high on your face and can actually have the opposite desired effect and will drag your down your face, creating an older appearance.

How did contouring get started?
In 1934, Max Factor created and coined the term contouring. He was inspired to create this new technique after seeing theatre actors use it to exaggerate their facial features. Factor noticed that this technique wasn't quite as flattering on film as it was on stage, so he decided to put his own twist on shading so that the makeup didn't appear too flat on film. In 1945, he created the first step-by-step tutorial on how to contour your face.
