On Pain

The world of science and medicine largely defines pain as your brain's perception of intense, irritating, or damaging stimuli. The pain signal protects us, motivating us to move from the stimuli. Though it seems like a nice idea at first, losing the sense of pain can have drastic consequences. I have friends who live in chronic pain, and that's obviously no fun either.

Specialized cells called nociceptors respond to strong noxious mechanical, thermal, and chemical stimuli, translating irritation and damage into signals that the brain understands as pain.
