laser season: why fall + winter are the best time for laser treatments
If you've been putting off addressing sun damage, uneven tone, or skin texture concerns, fall is your window. Laser treatments can be performed year-round, but cooler months are the strategic choice — less active sun exposure means faster recovery, better results, and lower risk of post-treatment pigmentation issues.
Here's what to know about the two laser skin treatments we offer at milk + honey medSPA: BroadBand Light (BBL) and Moxi.
BroadBand Light (BBL)
What it is
BroadBand Light (BBL) is a photofacial treatment from Sciton that delivers multiple wavelengths of light energy into the outer layer of the skin. It promotes collagen production and stimulates cell regeneration, with technology precise enough to be customized to your specific skin concerns.
What BBL treats
BBL is most effective for improving skin tone and targeting:
- Hyperpigmentation and age spots
- Active acne and acne scarring
- Rosacea and redness
- Broken capillaries
- Freckles
Treatment areas include the face, neck, décolleté, arms, and hands.
One important note: BBL is typically best suited for lighter skin tones. Darker skin tones can absorb more light energy, which may result in hypo or hyperpigmentation. Our medSPA providers will always conduct a consultation first to confirm whether BBL is the right fit for your skin.
How many sessions does BBL require?
BBL is not a single-session treatment. A minimum of 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is recommended for meaningful results. Your provider will build a customized treatment plan based on your skin's condition and your goals.
BBL downtime
Minimal. Expect redness immediately after treatment that typically subsides within a few hours. Some guests experience a "coffee ground" texture as pigmentation naturally sloughs off over a few days — this is normal. Pigmentation may appear temporarily darker before it clears. During this time, avoid picking, exfoliating, or scrubbing the treated area, as doing so can cause longer-term scarring. Daily SPF is non-negotiable, and limiting direct sun exposure will protect your results.
Moxi laser
What it is
Moxi is a non-ablative fractional resurfacing laser, meaning it delivers energy to the skin without removing the surface layer. Compared to more aggressive resurfacing lasers, Moxi gently improves the visible signs of aging with minimal to no downtime. It's safe for all skin types and tones, with three energy settings for a fully customized treatment.
What Moxi treats
Moxi is designed to improve skin texture and is particularly well-suited for:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Uneven texture and acne scarring
- Sun damage and brown pigmentation, including melasma
- Minor skin laxity
Treatment areas include the face, neck, décolleté, arms, and hands.
How many sessions does Moxi require?
A minimum of 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart is recommended. As with BBL, your provider will tailor a plan to your skin's needs.
Moxi downtime
Expect immediate redness and a warm sensation that typically resolves within a day or two. Mild swelling, pinpoint sensitivity, and surface roughness as the treated skin cells slough away are all normal. Daily SPF and reduced direct sun exposure support the best possible outcome during recovery.
BBL vs. Moxi: what's the difference?
Both treatments use energy-based technology to resurface and rejuvenate skin, but they target different concerns. Here's a quick comparison:
| BBL | Moxi | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary focus | Skin tone | Skin texture |
| Best for | Hyperpigmentation, redness, acne, broken capillaries | Fine lines, scarring, sun damage, laxity |
| Skin tones | Best for lighter tones | Safe for all skin types and tones |
| Downtime | Minimal (24 hrs) | Minimal (1–2 days) |
| Sessions needed | 3–4 sessions | 3 sessions |
| Can combine? | Yes — BBL + Moxi in one session targets both tone and texture | Yes |
The most effective approach for many guests is combining both in a single session — BBL addresses tone while Moxi addresses texture simultaneously.
How laser treatments fit into a broader skin plan
Laser skin treatments work best as part of a longer-term approach to skin health. Depending on your concerns, they pair well with:
- Microneedling — for deeper acne scarring treatment and collagen stimulation
- Advanced skincare — including chemical peels for peels for acne scarring and resurfacing
- Injectables — to address fine lines and volume loss alongside tone and texture work
- Regeneratives — PRP and PRF to support healing and amplify results
At-home care matters too. Supporting your skin between reservations with a clinical-grade routine from SkinCeuticals or Colorescience — especially a broad-spectrum SPF — will extend what you get from every treatment.
