Have you ever settled in for a spa service and found yourself instantly relaxing before your provider even returned to work on you? It reminds me of a joke.

One day a carpenter walks into his shop to find his apprentice hammering away at his own hand. In shock and concern he explodes into intervention and demands to know why on Earth would his ward do such a thing. Dreamily the apprentice answers, "Because it feels so good when I stop...".

Sure it's an old joke, but one that strikes a little too close to home to be really all that funny for a lot of us in this day and age. Maybe in the future old fogies who tell this joke will only meet with the blank face of the listener's confusion.

My interests as a therapist and a participant in our modern ages' dramas of life and meaning drive me to do a lot of research into realms that my scope of practice do not ordinarily cover. I find the attitudes of unconscious drives to "make it" in the world particularly harsh. The reality that I observe suggests that this isn't actually a sustainable approach. Negative physical, psychic, and social consequences ensue. Sometimes we need to drop the armor and breathe in our vulnerability in spaces that are safe to do so. That's just a pattern I see with regards to stress and action.
