medSPA: Fact or Fiction - Filler Edition
Amidst the array of medSPA treatments falling under the 'anti-aging' umbrella, rather than providing a general overview for our medSPA Skin Series, let's get into the fundamentals of each treatment individually.
To start, let’s talk about fillers!
In the realm of aesthetic treatments, dermal fillers have become an increasingly popular anti-aging treatment over the past few years. However, navigating through all the information on dermal fillers can be challenging, making it harder to separate fact from fiction. With the spread of misinformation on social media and online, it’s time to delve into some of the common myths surrounding this treatment and uncover the truth.
Myth: Dermal fillers will make you look ‘fake’
Fact: Dermal fillers tend to get a bad reputation, with many associating this treatment with an unnatural appearance. However, under the expertise of a skilled and experienced medical provider, dermal fillers can yield subtle, natural-looking results from enhancing existing features to adding volume or smoothing out facial folds. At milk + honey, our goal is to never change the way our patients look but help reveal the best version of themselves!
Myth: All dermal fillers work the same way
Fact: Fillers come in all shapes and sizes! Hyaluronic acid (HA) based fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane products are composed of a naturally occurring substance found within the body, providing immediate volume and hydration to the skin. Within these HA product lines, there are a variety of different types of Juvederm or Restylane formulations each tailored with different viscosities to address specific concerns or areas of the face. This allows our providers to customize results to our patients unique features.
Biostimulators such as Sculptra are made from a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which stimulates collagen production over time. Unlike traditional dermal fillers that provide immediate volume, Sculptra works gradually by promoting the body's natural collagen synthesis over time. Additionally, Sculptra is not a hyaluronic acid based dermal filler meaning it cannot be dissolved with hylenex.
Myth: Dermal fillers and neurotoxins are the same thing
Fact: False. While both dermal fillers and neurotoxins are cosmetic injectables, they serve different purposes! Neurotoxins, like Botox or Dysport work by temporarily relaxing facial muscles to reduce and prevent fine lines and wrinkles from forming caused by repetitive facial movements. They can also be used in unexpected ways to target hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), TMJ, chronic migraines, and more!
On the other hand, dermal fillers work by adding volume beneath the surface of the skin, smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles, enhancing features or adding contours to aid in a more youthful appearance.
Myth: Once you start, you can’t stop
Fact: While there's a general expectation and timeline regarding the duration of filler results, the frequency of treatments varies based on factors such as the type of filler used, its placement, and the individual's being treated. Filler is affected by how fast the body metabolizes the product and can vary from patient to patient.
While filler treatments do require maintenance (as they are not permanent), it's not imperative if the patient decides against it. Should they opt out of subsequent treatments, their skin will naturally return to its pre-filler state without any dire consequences.
Understanding the facts about our medSPA treatments is essential! Our team of expert medical providers are dedicated to dispelling any myths around dermal fillers and will work closely with our patients to determine what treatments align best with their individual goals and needs.
